Winter Night in Boston

Winter Night in Boston

View of the Back Bay area at night from across the Charles River, Memorial Drive near the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) Boathouse in Cambridge.

The major landmarks in the Back Bay area are noted in the image (in my flickr site), including the "newer" John Hancock Tower & the "older" John Hancock building (visit the John Hancock Tower set for more images of this landmark Tower viewed from different parts of MetroBoston), The Prudential Tower, 500 Boylston Street, 111 Huntington Avenue, and more.

The small boats on the foreground were on the Cambridge side of the Charles River which is just slightly less than a mile wide at this vantage. The two-level river and dark band shown in the glassy river indicates the boundary where the frozen icy portion still was evident.

This was taken a week after the Noreaster on Valentines Day 2007 and a day just before mild snow dusting we had yesterday. In the other shots it should be possible to see the remains of the previous mild "snowstorm", at least for Boston.

It was supposed to be a mildly warm night (for Winter) at just below freezing but the breeze from Charles River could cause frostbite.

I.M. Pei's Glass Pyramid Louvre

I.M. Pei's Glass Pyramid LouvreThis is a stunning counterpoint --- an inverted glass pyramid -- to the outer glass pyramid created by IM Pei for the Louvre Museum.

The simple but quite elegrant glass pyramid unified the vast expanse of the Louvre Museum connecting three wings. Apart from providing natural lighting, the glass pyramid lends an atrium feel to the visitor center.

The plants softens the harshness of the geometric forms.

IM Pei, the Chinese-American architect, became famous for his use of glass in many of his architectural creations. This became his signature when he was commissioned by the former US First Lady Jagueline Kennedy to design the John F. Kennedy Library and Museum in Boston. He then went on to design the first all glass skyscraper in the world, the John Hancock Tower in Boston. This pioneering design became the forerunner of modern glass skyscraper buildings, also replicated in many of Pei's own creations, worldwide.

Art Viewing Fatigue

Art Viewing Fatigue

Can there be such thing as "art viewing fatigue"? That was exactly what I experienced when I first visited the Louvre. Our travel guide told us exaggerated stories to impress how vast the collection of the Louvre was, so I decided to forego everything else of the activities planned for the day, to devote it solely to the Louvre -- from early morning until they closed.

The "art viewing fatigue" that I experienced was not because they were not so good, but more because I was overwhelmed with the quantity presented. I literally walked several miles along the many hallways and rooms of the Louvre that day, and had to stop several times, not only because of physical fatigue but more to give my eyes some rest.

JFK Library and Museum

JFK Library and Museum

The design of the building and the landscaping is not only art but a triumph of how man-made structures can become one with its environment, rather than dominating the environment. [This image of the JFK Library and Museums is best viewed in its original large size to appreciate the minimalist but quite regal architecture of this building.]

The "square emerald cut" of the glass structure dominates the building. Here, a contrast between a black glass, against the all white solid building -- emphasizes the elegant simplicity and beauty of the building. There were minimal windows, not visible here, except on the left side of the building. Other than minimal artificial lighting; most of the illumination inside comes from the glass atrium and to an extent the glass at the entrance lobby. All the exhibits themselves -- except the large flag in the atrium -- were isolated from the breathtaking views of the Columbia Point with the solid white concrete structure.

Visit the almost identical image, Reality and Perception, to have a glimpse of what was going through my mind while I was walking and taking the images in this series. This image of the Boston CityScape was taken more than 10-min after a similar Back Bay Winter Night 2007 and the Boston Government Center/Financial District. View a representative Boston Back Bay CityScape at Night taken at a slightly different location but also along the Memorial Drive in Cambridge. [Sorry I had to keep on moving here because it was freezing cold when these images were taken. I had to get to the nearest subway station by the time I was done. As it turned out, I must have walked about 5 miles or so.]
